Week of May 21-May 25

The Week's Highlights...

This week, we read quite a few books about grandparents in preparation for Grandperson’s Day on Friday.  In literacy centers, we began working on a theme of ocean animals and things we might see at the beach.  The students read books about ocean animals and the beach, as well as read and illustrated a mini-book about fish.  We also explored this theme in our math lessons this week, incorporating in a review of ones/tens place, a lesson about rounding, and graphing and tally marks.  The students also learned about fact families this week.  In social studies, the class covered Mount Rushmore.  After hearing a book about Mount Rushmore, the kids took the presidents’ faces and glued them on the landmark and labeled the presidents.  We were also very excited for 3 of our Flat Friends to return to school this week.  Flat Shea arrived after traveling northwest to Minnesota.  There, he got to see his aunt graduate at the University of Minnesota (home of the gophers) and spent time with his grandfather.  Both Flat Jack and Flat Khai made the journey northeast to Massachusetts.  Flat Jack spent some time with his cousin in Northborough, Massachusetts and was able to accompany his dad back on an airplane flight to Charlotte.  Flat Khai had quite the adventure visiting Boston.  He went from Boston Logan Airport, got to stay in a hotel, traveled on the “T” (subway train), and even got to see Harvard!  Our week ended with a wonderful program for our grandpersons, and we enjoyed them coming to our classroom to play Kindergarten Jeopardy and make bookmarks for each other.

Swimming

Students will be swimming as part of their PE class on Tuesday, May 29th.  Students should wear their bathing suit to school under their PE uniform.  Please apply sunscreen BEFORE sending your child to school, as they will not be allowed to participate without sunscreen.  The kids should bring a towel and underwear to school with them to use after we have been swimming.  If your child uses goggles, “floaties”, etc, you may send these to school with them.  To help make sure everything gets where it needs to be, please label all loose items clearly.  Thank you for your assistance with this.
